Week Eight

Our First Tree Ever!

We picked up our very first Christmas Tree at Mother Earth Gardens.  It is an Organic Free-Range tree from MN’s northern woods, a program sponsored by polar explorer Will Steger and Jeff Forester (link is a YouTube video).

Not surprising, Ruby is the first to care for and water our tree.

Science Thermometer reading:  “It’s 23 out!” Left-overs for the birds:  our purple coneflowers are spent, but are getting eaten by our feathered friends.

Checking out the coyotes checking out the porcupine.

They were amazed by the size of the eagle and sharpness of its talons.

Ruby’s favorite at the Touch and See room.

Buffalo Before Breakfast by Mary Pope Osborne got us thinking about the Great Plains and animals’ habitats.  Thunder on the Plains by Ken Robbins and Prairie Grasslands by Wayne Lynch both tie into our prairie theme.

We continue daily listening to Suzuki discs and play Jingle Bells.  Internet radio has been added to our repertoire to Big R Radio’s Christmas Music, Holiday Jazz (Jazz Radio.com), and New Orleans/Classical Music & NPR on iTunes.

The boys were surprised to find that Moonlight on the Magic Flute by Mary Pope Osborne is about Mozart’s childhood.

Our version of this Family Fun turkey hat.

Miles has been finding many occasions to sport his turkey hat (even after this picture).

Crafts for All Seasons put the gobble in this turkey craft.

Our turkey treats are a distant relative of the ones we saw at The Finer Things in Life.

Social Studies and Language Arts

Some of the Thanksgiving-themed books in our pile to read were Fluffy’s Thanksgiving by Kate McMullan and Thanksgiving by Alice K. Flanagan.

Miles practiced using capital letters and punctuation with word card sentences (similar to last week).  He also worked on handwriting in cursive.

Colored a world map and drew the Mayflower’s route, as well as a variety of other Thanksgiving-themed coloring and math sheets.

Health and Wellness

Yoga Bites from Breathing First:  Lion’s Breath (YouTube video, not one of us) and High/Low, Tortoise Breath and Swing Set.  Kendi Kost’s Yoga for Kids on YouTube shows many different kids’ poses.

We continue our play park visits for our short week of school.

Math and Logic

Afternoon math game Ten Apples on Top from First Grade ala Cart

Parker is on a dot-to-dot-athon (1 to 100s!).  One day he did 5 in a row – go Parker!

As you may have noticed, it has been a short academic week in observation to Thanksgiving!
