Monarch Butterfly

When the chrysalis turned black (for about twelve hours), we knew that the butterfly would be hatching soon.

It took about ten minutes for the butterfly to ‘inflate’ its wings

Parker even got his movie popcorn from yesterday to watch ‘the show’.

This butterfly is female (no black spots on her hind, or lower, wings).

Distinguishing between male and female at Great Plains Nature Center.  We had two chrysalises hatch this week, and one was a male (had dark spots on his hind wings) and one  was a female (no dark spots on her hind wings).  We even got to see one of the butterflies drinking nectar.  Although this our third year of raising monarchs, everyone still enjoys them and continues to be amazed by their life cycle.

Literature Arts

Checking out a different variety of books at the Eden Prairie Library.  Came home with some faves:  Randy Riley’s Really Big Hit by Chris Van Dusen (good baseball and imagination book),  My Little Sister Ate One Hare by Bill Grossman, Prairie Dogs Perching: Counting by 3’s by Amanda Doering Tourville (both math books),  and more of the Mr. Putter & Tabby series.

Measured at about 3/4 inches.  What is hail?  Why does it hail? Some answers at Weather Wiz Kids.

Charlie Parker Played Be Bop by Chris Raschka and listening to Charlie Parker’s 101 Charlie Parker Classics album on Spotify.  Learned that Charlie Parker played alto saxophone.

During weekly lessons and at home, Miles has been incorporating some practice songs from Bastien Piano Basics and Alfred’s Basic Piano Books.  He continues playing Cradle Song (von Weber), Minuet 1 (Bach), Minuet in G minor (Bach), and Happy Farmer (Schumann).

This link takes you to Miles playing Bobcat Boogie (John W. Schaum).

Parker has been working on Allegro (Suzuki)and Cuckoo (German folk song) with both hands.

This link takes you to Parker playing Old Uncle Bill (Alfred’s Basic Piano Book)
