Planting more seeds: beans, basil, marigolds, and seed potatoes

Strawberries survived the bunny raid, and so did blueberries and raspberries as well as seedlings

IMG_8222

Car-picnic! We don’t have a table yet, so the cooler lid covered with a cloth will do the job.

Tilling, Planting, and Fencing, Oh My!

We hired a pro to come and till

Most seeds are in, including compost pile. We left before some severe thunderstorms hit!

Play tent turned potty shelter. Inside is our portable camp toilet. There are no services here, so we bring them along. Next time we’ll bring stakes for the tent.

Lunch!

Small temporary (so we think) pond

IMG_6804

Saw the Laura Ingalls Wilder birthplace historical site on County Road CC toward Pepin.

We hiked and explored, had lunch, and brainstormed some upcoming projects.  Saw three deer and a soaring turkey vulture and heard an owl and many other birds.

Late March Explorations

IMG_6508

After hiking in (snow too deep to drive), all climbed trees.

IMG_6525

Found an ever better slope to sled

IMG_6550

Discovered frozen water under a huge downed-tree and lots of mushrooms and moss

IMG_6601

Enjoyed a quick, picnic-style lunch

Crawling through brush tunnels

And to top it all off, we heard and saw about four bald eagles fly overhead!

March Reading

As spring nears, garden plans (as well as other plans) are coming together.  Some good reads:   Made from Scratch:  Discovering the Pleasures of a Handmade Life by Jenna Woginrich, The Ultimate Guide to Growing Your Own Food by Monte Burch, Organic Gardening by Christine Lavelle, Carrots Love Tomatoes by Louise Riotte, and planning site Smart Gardener.

Another fun February visit meeting neighbors, family, and making new friends!

Miles getting the hang of snowboarding

Collection of gear to play with during our five hour stay (shovels for digging out neighbors and family!). Most of these items have been in storage for many years!

Our long outdoor day seemed to energize instead of exhaust everyone

Watching a few deer playing and calling to each other

You can barely see them, but the boys are running down a path

IMG_4130

Returning after a short hike, hearing lots of birds: woodpeckers, an eagle, chickadees to name a few
